If worth if genius to the world are dearA
To Henry's shade devote no common tearB
His worth on no precarious tenure hungC
From genuine piety his virtues sprungC
If pure benevolence if steady senseD
Can to the feeling heart delight dispenseD
If all the highest efforts of the mindE
Exalted noble elegant refinedE
Call for fond sympathy's heart felt regretF
Ye sons of genius pay the mournful debtF
His friends can truly speak how large his claimG
And Life was only wanting to his fameG
Art thou indeed dear youth for ever fledH
So quickly number'd with the silent deadH
Too sure I read it in the downcast eyeI
Hear it in mourning friendship's stifled sighI
Ah could esteem or admiration saveJ
So dear an object from the untimely graveJ
This transcript faint had not essay'd to tellK
The loss of one beloved revered so wellK
Vainly I try even eloquence were weakL
The silent sorrow that I feel to speakL
No more my hours of pain thy voice will cheerA
And bind my spirit to this lower sphereA
Bend o'er my suffering frame with gentle sighI
And bid new fire relume my languid eyeI
No more the pencil's mimic art commandM
And with kind pity guide my trembling handM
Nor dwell upon the page in fond regardN
To trace the meaning of the Tuscan bardN
Vain all the pleasures thou canst not inspireO
And in my breast the imperfect joys expireO
I fondly hoped thy hand might grace my shrineP
And little dream'd I should have wept o'er thineP
In fancy's eye methought I saw thy lyreO
With virtue's energies each bosom fireQ
I saw admiring nations press aroundR
Eager to catch the animating soundR
And when at length sunk in the shades of nightS
To brighter worlds thy spirit wing'd its flightS
Thy country hail'd thy venerated shadeT
And each graced honour to thy memory paidT
Such was the fate hope pictured to my viewU
But who alas e'er found hope's visions trueU
And ah a dark presage when last we metF
Sadden'd the social hour with deep regretF
When thou thy portrait from the minstrel drewU
The living Edwin starting on my viewU
Silent I ask'd of Heaven a lengthen'd dateV
His genius thine but not like thine his fateV
Shuddering I gazed and saw too sure revealedW
The fatal truth by hope till then conceal'dW
Too strong the portion of celestial flameG
For its weak tenement the fragile frameG
Too soon for us it sought its native skyI
And soar'd impervious to the mortal eyeI
Like some clear planet shadow'd from our sightS
Leaving behind long tracks of lucid lightS
So shall thy bright example fire each youthX
With love of virtue piety and truthX
Long o'er thy loss shall grateful Granta mournY
And bid her sons revere thy favour'd urnZ
When thy loved flower spring's victory makes knownA2
The primrose pale shall bloom for thee aloneA2
Around thy urn the rosemary well spreadH
Whose tender fragrance emblem of the deadH
Shall teach the maid whose bloom no longer livesB2
That virtue every perish'd grace survivesC2
Farewell sweet Moralist heart sickening griefD2
Tells me in duty's path to seek reliefD2
With surer aim on faith's strong pinions riseE2
And seek hope's vanish'd anchor in the skiesE2
Yet still on thee shall fond remembrance dwellK
And to the world thy worth delight to tellK
Though well I feel unworthy thee the laysF2
That to thy memory weeping friendship paysF2
