Cum ruit imbriferum verA
Spicea jam campis cum messis inhorruit et cumB
Frumenta in viridi stipula lactentia turgentC
Cuncta tibi Cererem pubes agrestis adoretC
VIRGILD
-
-
Moon of Harvest herald mildC
Of plenty rustic labour's childC
Hail oh hail I greet thy beamE
As soft it trembles o'er the streamE
And gilds the straw thatch'd hamlet wideC
Where Innocence and Peace resideC
'Tis thou that gladd'st with joy the rustic throngF
Promptest the tripping dance the exhilarating songF
-
Moon of Harvest I do loveG
O'er the uplands now to roveH
While thy modest ray sereneI
Gilds the wide surrounding sceneI
And to watch thee riding highJ
In the blue vault of the skyJ
Where no thin vapour intercepts thy rayK
But in unclouded majesty thou walkest on thy wayK
-
Pleasing 'tis oh modest MoonL
Now the night is at her noonL
'Neath thy sway to musing lieJ
While around the zephyrs sighJ
Fanning soft the sun tann'd wheatC
Ripen'd by the summer's heatC
Picturing all the rustic's joyM
When boundless plenty greets his eyeJ
And thinking soonL
Oh modest MoonL
How many a female eye will roamN
Along the roadC
To see the loadC
The last dear load of harvest homeN
-
Storms and tempests floods and rainsO
Stern despoilers of the plainsO
Hence away the season fleeP
Foes to light heart jollityC
May no winds careering highJ
Drive the clouds along the skyJ
But may all nature smile with aspect boonL
When in the heavens thou show'st thy face oh Harvest MoonL
-
'Neath yon lowly roof he liesQ
The husbandman with deep seal'd eyesQ
He dreams of crowded barns and roundC
The yard he hears the flail resoundC
Oh may no hurricane destroyM
His visionary views of joyM
God of the winds oh hear his humble prayerR
And while the Moon of Harvest shines thy blustering whirlwind spareR
-
Sons of luxury to youS
Leave I sleep's dull power to wooS
Press ye still the downy bedC
While feverish dreams surround your headC
I will seek the woodland gladeC
Penetrate the thickest shadeC
Wrapp'd in contemplation's dreamsT
Musing high on holy themesT
While on the galeU
Shall softly sailU
The nightingale's enchanting tuneL
And oft my eyesQ
Shall grateful riseQ
To thee the modest Harvest MoonL
