To My Lyre Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAAB ACAAC BDEED EFBEF GHGGH EIJJI KALLA MNAAN OCOOC| Thou simple Lyre thy music wild | A |
| Has served to charm the weary hour | B |
| And many a lonely night has 'guiled | A |
| When even pain has own'd and smiled | A |
| Its fascinating power | B |
| - | |
| Yet O my Lyre the busy crowd | A |
| Will little heed thy simple tones | C |
| Them mightier minstrels harping loud | A |
| Engross and thou and I must shroud | A |
| Where dark oblivion 'thrones | C |
| - | |
| No hand they diapason o'er | B |
| Well skill'd I throw with sweep sublime | D |
| For me no academic lore | E |
| Has taught the solemn strain to pour | E |
| Or build the polish'd rhyme | D |
| - | |
| Yet thou to sylvan themes canst soar | E |
| Thou know'st to charm the woodland train | F |
| The rustic swains believe thy power | B |
| Can hush the wild winds when they roar | E |
| And still the billowy main | F |
| - | |
| These honours Lyre we yet may keep | G |
| I still unknown may live with thee | H |
| And gentle zephyr's wing will sweep | G |
| Thy solemn string where low I sleep | G |
| Beneath the alder tree | H |
| - | |
| This little dirge will please me more | E |
| Than the full requiem's swelling peal | I |
| I'd rather than that crowds should sigh | J |
| For me that from some kindred eye | J |
| The trickling tear should steal | I |
| - | |
| Yet dear to me the wreath of bay | K |
| Perhaps from me debarr'd | A |
| And dear to me the classic zone | L |
| Which snatch'd from learning's labour'd throne | L |
| Adorns the accepted bard | A |
| - | |
| And O if yet 'twere mine to dwell | M |
| Where Cam or Isis winds along | N |
| Perchance inspired with ardour chaste | A |
| I yet might call the ear of taste | A |
| To listen to my song | N |
| - | |
| Oh then my little friend thy style | O |
| I'd change to happier lays | C |
| Oh then the cloister'd glooms should smile | O |
| And through the long the fretted aisle | O |
| Should swell the note of praise | C |
