To Midnight Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCCB DDEFFE GGHIJH KKLMNL BBOLLO

Season of general rest whose solemn stillA
Strikes to the trembling heart a fearful chillA
But speaks to philosophic souls delightB
Thee do I hail as at my casement highC
My candle waning melancholy byC
I sit and taste the holy calm of nightB
-
Yon pensive orb that through the ether sailsD
And gilds the misty shadows of the valesD
Hanging in thy dull rear her vestal flameE
To her while all around in sleep reclineF
Wakeful I raise my orisons divineF
And sing the gentle honours of her nameE
-
While Fancy lone o'er me her votary bendsG
To lift my soul her fairy visions sendsG
And pours upon my ear her thrilling songH
And Superstition's gentle terrors comeI
See see yon dim ghost gliding through the gloomJ
See round yon churchyard elm what spectres throngH
-
Meanwhile I tune to some romantic layK
My flageolet and as I pensive playK
The sweet notes echo o'er the mountain sceneL
The traveller late journeying o'er the moorsM
Hears them aghast while still the dull owl poursN
Her hollow screams each dreary pause betweenL
-
Till in the lonely tower he spies the lightB
Now faintly flashing on the glooms of nightB
Where I poor muser my lone vigils keepO
And 'mid the dreary solitude sereneL
Cast a much meaning glance upon the sceneL
And raise my mournful eye to Heaven and weepO
