To Midnight Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABCCB DDEFFE GGHIJH KKLMNL BBOLLO| Season of general rest whose solemn still | A |
| Strikes to the trembling heart a fearful chill | A |
| But speaks to philosophic souls delight | B |
| Thee do I hail as at my casement high | C |
| My candle waning melancholy by | C |
| I sit and taste the holy calm of night | B |
| - | |
| Yon pensive orb that through the ether sails | D |
| And gilds the misty shadows of the vales | D |
| Hanging in thy dull rear her vestal flame | E |
| To her while all around in sleep recline | F |
| Wakeful I raise my orisons divine | F |
| And sing the gentle honours of her name | E |
| - | |
| While Fancy lone o'er me her votary bends | G |
| To lift my soul her fairy visions sends | G |
| And pours upon my ear her thrilling song | H |
| And Superstition's gentle terrors come | I |
| See see yon dim ghost gliding through the gloom | J |
| See round yon churchyard elm what spectres throng | H |
| - | |
| Meanwhile I tune to some romantic lay | K |
| My flageolet and as I pensive play | K |
| The sweet notes echo o'er the mountain scene | L |
| The traveller late journeying o'er the moors | M |
| Hears them aghast while still the dull owl pours | N |
| Her hollow screams each dreary pause between | L |
| - | |
| Till in the lonely tower he spies the light | B |
| Now faintly flashing on the glooms of night | B |
| Where I poor muser my lone vigils keep | O |
| And 'mid the dreary solitude serene | L |
| Cast a much meaning glance upon the scene | L |
| And raise my mournful eye to Heaven and weep | O |
