Rhyme Scheme: ABCCBDE FGEHGAG CIJJIAI KLMMLNL OPQQPAP RSTTSCS HLUULALChild of Misfortune Offspring of the Muse | A |
Mark like the meteor's gleam his mad career | B |
With hollow cheeks and haggard eye | C |
Behold he shrieking passes by | C |
I see I see him near | B |
That hollow scream that deepening groan | D |
It rings upon mine ear | E |
- | |
Oh come ye thoughtless ye deluded youth | F |
Who clasp the syren pleasure to your breast | G |
Behold the wreck of genius here | E |
And drop oh drop the silent tear | H |
For Dermody at rest | G |
His fate is yours then from your loins | A |
Tear quick the silken vest | G |
- | |
Saw'st thou his dying bed Saw'st thou his eye | C |
Once flashing fire despair's dim tear distil | I |
How ghastly did it seem | J |
And then his dying scream | J |
Oh God I hear it still | I |
It sounds upon my fainting sense | A |
It strikes with deathly chill | I |
- | |
Say didst thou mark the brilliant poet's death | K |
Saw'st thou an anxious father by his bed | L |
Or pitying friends around him stand | M |
Or didst thou see a mother's hand | M |
Support his languid head | L |
Oh none of these no friend o'er him | N |
The balm of pity shed | L |
- | |
Now come around ye flippant sons of wealth | O |
Sarcastic smile on genius fallen low | P |
Now come around who pant for fame | Q |
And learn from hence a poet's name | Q |
Is purchased but by woe | P |
And when ambition prompts to rise | A |
Oh think of him below | P |
- | |
For me poor moralizer I will run | R |
Dejected to some solitary state | S |
The muse has set her seal on me | T |
She set her seal on Dermody | T |
It is the seal of fate | S |
In some lone spot my bones may lie | C |
Secure from human hate | S |
- | |
Yet ere I go I'll drop one silent tear | H |
Where lies unwept the poet's fallen head | L |
May peace her banners o'er him wave | U |
For me in my deserted grave | U |
No friend a tear shall shed | L |
Yet may the lily and the rose | A |
Bloom on my grassy bed | L |
