Child of Misfortune Offspring of the MuseA
Mark like the meteor's gleam his mad careerB
With hollow cheeks and haggard eyeC
Behold he shrieking passes byC
I see I see him nearB
That hollow scream that deepening groanD
It rings upon mine earE
-
Oh come ye thoughtless ye deluded youthF
Who clasp the syren pleasure to your breastG
Behold the wreck of genius hereE
And drop oh drop the silent tearH
For Dermody at restG
His fate is yours then from your loinsA
Tear quick the silken vestG
-
Saw'st thou his dying bed Saw'st thou his eyeC
Once flashing fire despair's dim tear distilI
How ghastly did it seemJ
And then his dying screamJ
Oh God I hear it stillI
It sounds upon my fainting senseA
It strikes with deathly chillI
-
Say didst thou mark the brilliant poet's deathK
Saw'st thou an anxious father by his bedL
Or pitying friends around him standM
Or didst thou see a mother's handM
Support his languid headL
Oh none of these no friend o'er himN
The balm of pity shedL
-
Now come around ye flippant sons of wealthO
Sarcastic smile on genius fallen lowP
Now come around who pant for fameQ
And learn from hence a poet's nameQ
Is purchased but by woeP
And when ambition prompts to riseA
Oh think of him belowP
-
For me poor moralizer I will runR
Dejected to some solitary stateS
The muse has set her seal on meT
She set her seal on DermodyT
It is the seal of fateS
In some lone spot my bones may lieC
Secure from human hateS
-
Yet ere I go I'll drop one silent tearH
Where lies unwept the poet's fallen headL
May peace her banners o'er him waveU
For me in my deserted graveU
No friend a tear shall shedL
Yet may the lily and the roseA
Bloom on my grassy bedL
