Come Disappointment comeA
Not in thy terrors cladB
Come in thy meekest saddest guiseC
Thy chastening rod but terrifiesC
The restless and the badB
But I reclineD
Beneath thy shrineD
And round my brow resign'd thy peaceful cypress twineD
-
Though Fancy flies awayE
Before thy hollow treadF
Yet Meditation in her cellG
Hears with faint eye the lingering knellG
That tells her hopes are deadF
And though the tearH
By chance appearI
Yet she can smile and say My all was not laid hereJ
-
Come Disappointment comeA
Though from Hope's summit hurl'dK
Still rigid Nurse thou art forgivenL
For thou severe wert sent from heavenL
To wean me from the worldK
To turn my eyeM
From vanityN
And point to scenes of bliss that never never dieM
-
What is this passing sceneO
A peevish April dayE
A little sun a little rainP
And then night sweeps along the plainP
And all things fade awayE
Man soon discuss'dQ
Yields up his trustQ
And all his hopes and fears lie with him in the dustQ
-
Oh what is Beauty's powerR
It flourishes and diesC
Will the cold earth its silence breakS
To tell how soft how smooth a cheekT
Beneath its surface liesC
Mute mute is allU
O'er Beauty's fallU
Her praise resounds no more when mantled in her pallV
-
The most beloved on earthW
Not long survives to dayE
So music past is obsoleteX
And yet 'twas sweet 'twas passing sweetX
But now 'tis gone awayE
Thus does the shadeY
In memory fadeY
When in forsaken tomb the form beloved is laidY
-
Then since this world is vainP
And volatile and fleetX
Why should I lay up earthly joysZ
Where rust corrupts and moth destroysZ
And cares and sorrows eatX
Why fly from illA2
With anxious skillA2
When soon this hand will freeze this throbbing heart be stillA2
-
Come Disappointment comeA
Thou art not stern to meN
Sad Monitress I own thy swayE
A votary sad in early dayE
I bend my knee to theeN
From sun to sunL
My race will runL
I only bow and say My God thy will be doneL
-
On another paper are a few lines written probably in theB2
freshness of his disappointmentC2
-
I dream no more the vision flies awayE
And DisappointmentC2
There fell my hopes I lost my all in thisD2
My cherish'd all of visionary blissD2
Now hope farewell farewell all joys belowE2
Now welcome sorrow and now welcome woeE2
Plunge me in gloomsD2
