Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGGHHAAII JJKKLLIICCMNLoud rage the winds without The wintry cloud | A |
O'er the cold northstar casts her flitting shroud | A |
And Silence pausing in some snow clad dale | B |
Starts as she hears by fits the shrieking gale | B |
Where now shut out from every still retreat | C |
Her pine clad summit and her woodland seat | C |
Shall Meditation in her saddest mood | D |
Retire o'er all her pensive stores to brood | D |
Shivering and blue the peasant eyes askance | E |
The drifted fleeces that around him dance | E |
And hurries on his half averted form | F |
Stemming the fury of the sidelong storm | F |
Him soon shall greet his snow topp'd cot of thatch | G |
Soon shall his numb'd hand tremble on the latch | G |
Soon from his chimney's nook the cheerful flame | H |
Diffuse a genial warmth throughout his frame | H |
Round the light fire while roars the north wind loud | A |
What merry groups of vacant faces crowd | A |
These hail his coming these his meal prepare | I |
And boast in all that cot no lurking care | I |
- | |
What though the social circle be denied | J |
Even Sadness brightens at her own fireside | J |
Loves with fix'd eye to watch the fluttering blaze | K |
While musing Memory dwells on former days | K |
Or Hope bless'd spirit smiles and still forgiven | L |
Forgets the passport while she points to Heaven | L |
Then heap the fire shut out the biting air | I |
And from its station wheel the easy chair | I |
Thus fenced and warm in silent fit 'tis sweet | C |
To hear without the bitter tempest beat | C |
All all alone to sit and muse and sigh | M |
The pensive tenant of obscurity | N |
