Elegy, Occasioned By The Death Of Mr. Gill, Who Was Drowned In The River Trent, While Bathing, 9th A Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE GHGH IJIK LMLM NONO HPHP

He sunk the impetuous river roll'd alongA
The sullen wave betray'd his dying breathB
And rising sad the rustling sedge amongC
The gale of evening touch'd the cords of deathB
-
Nymph of the Trent why didst thou not appearD
To snatch the victim from thy felon waveE
Alas too late thou camest to embalm his bierF
And deck with waterflags his early graveE
-
Triumphant riding o'er its tumid preyG
Rolls the red stream in sanguinary prideH
While anxious crowds in vain expectant stayG
And ask the swoln corse from the murdering tideH
-
The stealing tear drop stagnates in the eyeI
The sudden sigh by friendship's bosom provedJ
I mark them rise I mark the general sighI
Unhappy youth and wert thou so belovedK
-
On thee as lone I trace the Trent's green brinkL
When the dim twilight slumbers on the gladeM
On thee my thoughts shall dwell nor Fancy shrinkL
To hold mysterious converse with thy shadeM
-
Of thee as early I with vagrant feetN
Hail the gray sandal'd morn in Colwick's valeO
Of thee my sylvan reed shall warble sweetN
And wild wood echoes shall repeat the taleO
-
And oh ye nymphs of P on who presideH
O'er running rill and salutary streamP
Guard ye in future well the halcyon tideH
From the rude death shriek and the dying screamP
