Yet once more and once more awake my HarpA
From silence and neglect one lofty strainB
Lofty yet wilder than the winds of HeavenC
And speaking mysteries more than words can tellD
I ask of thee for I with hymnings highE
Would join the dirge of the departing yearF
-
Yet with no wintry garland from the woodsG
Wrought of the leafless branch or ivy searF
Wreathe I thy tresses dark December nowH
Me higher quarrel calls with loudest songI
And fearful joy to celebrate the dayJ
Of the Redeemer Near two thousand sunsK
Have set their seals upon the rolling lapseL
Of generations since the dayspring firstM
Beam'd from on high Now to the mighty massN
Of that increasing aggregate we addO
One unit more Space in comparisonC
How small yet mark'd with how much miseryP
Wars famines and the fury PestilenceQ
Over the nations hanging her dread scourgeR
The oppressed too in silent bitternessS
Weeping their sufferance and the arm of wrongI
Forcing the scanty portion from the weakT
And steeping the lone widow's couch with tearsU
-
So has the year been character'd with woeV
In Christian land and mark'd with wrongs and crimesW
Yet 't was not thus He taught not thus He livedX
Whose birth we this day celebrate with prayerY
And much thanksgiving He a man of woesZ
Went on the way appointed path though rudeA2
Yet borne with patience still He came to cheerF
The broken hearted to raise up the sickB2
And on the wandering and benighted mindC2
To pour the light of truth O task divineD2
O more than angel teacher He had wordsE2
To soothe the barking waves and hush the windsF2
And when the soul was toss'd in troubled seasG2
Wrapp'd in thick darkness and the howling stormH2
He pointing to the star of peace on highE
Arm'd it with holy fortitude and bade it smileI2
At the surrounding wreckJ2
When with deep agony his heart was rack'dK2
Not for himself the tear drop dew'd his cheekT
For them He wept for them to Heaven He pray'dL2
His persecutors Father pardon themM2
They know not what they doN2
-
Angels of HeavenC
Ye who beheld Him fainting on the crossO2
And did him homage say may mortal joinP2
The halleluiahs of the risen GodQ2
Will the faint voice and grovelling song be heardR2
Amid the seraphim in light divineD2
Yes he will deign the Prince of Peace will deignB
For mercy to accept the hymn of faithS2
Low though it be and humble Lord of lifeT2
The Christ the Comforter thine advent nowH
Fills my uprising soul I mount I flyE
Far o'er the skies beyond the rolling orbsO2
The bonds of flesh dissolve and earth recedesO2
And care and pain and sorrow are no moreU2
