Deep embowered beside the forest riverA
Where the flame of sunset only fallsB
Lapped in silence lies the House of DyingC
House of them to whom the twilight callsB
-
There within when day was near to endingC
By her lord a woman young and strongD
By his chief a songman old and strickenE
Watched together till the hour of songD
-
O my songman now the bow is brokenE
Now the arrows one by one are spedF
Sing to me the song of Sr hmand ziG
Sr hmand zi home of all the deadF
-
Then the songman flinging wide his songnetF
On the last token laid his master's handF
While he sang the song of Sr hmand ziG
None but dying men can understandF
-
Yonder sun that fierce and fiery heartedF
Marches down the sky to vanish soonH
At the self same hour in Sr hmand ziG
Rises pallid like the rainy moonH
-
There he sees the heroes by their riverA
Where the great fish daily upward swimI
Yet they are but shadows hunting shadowsJ
Phantom fish in waters drear and dimI
-
There he sees the kings among their headmenH
Women weaving children playing gamesK
Yet they are but shadows ruling shadowsJ
Phantom folk with dim forgotten namesK
-
Bid farewell to all that most thou lovestF
Tell thy heart thy living life is doneH
All the days and deeds of Sr hmand ziG
Are not worth an hour of yonder sunH
-
Dreamily the chief from out the songnetF
Drew his hand and touched the woman's headF
Know they not then love in Sr hmand ziG
Has a king no bride among the deadF
-
Then the songman answered O my masterA
Love they know but none may learn it thereL
Only souls that reach that land togetherA
Keep their troth and find the twilight fairL
-
Thou art still a king and at thy passingC
By thy latest word must all abideF
If thou willest here am I thy songmanH
If thou lovest here is she thy brideF
-
Hushed and dreamy lay the House of DyingC
Dreamily the sunlight upward failedF
Dreamily the chief on eyes that loved himI
Looked with eyes the coming twilight veiledF
-
Then he cried My songman I am passingC
Let her live her life is but begunH
All the days and nights of Sr hmand ziG
Are not worth an hour of yonder sunH
-
Yet when there within the House of DyingC
The last silence held the sunset airL
Not alone he came to Sr hmand ziG
Not alone she found the twilight fairL
-
While the songman far beneath the forestF
Sang of Srahmandazi all night throughM
Lovely be thy name O Land of shadowsJ
Land of meeting Land of all the trueM
