Rhyme Scheme: A BCBCDEDFEF GHGHIAIJAJ KLKLMNMONO PQPQRSRTST

Partial firing continued until when a victory having been reported to the Right Honourable Lord Viscount Nelson K B and Commander in Chief he then died of his wound Log of the Victory OctoberA
-
-
England to day let fire be in thine eyesB
And in thy heart the throb of leaping gunsC
Crown in thy streets the deed that never diesB
And tell their fathers' fame to all thy sonsC
Behold behold on that unchanging seaD
Where day behind Trafalgar rises paleE
How dread the storm to beD
Drifts up with ominous breathF
Cloud after towering cloud of billowy sailE
Full charged with thunder and the bolts of deathF
-
Yet when the noon is past and thy delightG
More delicate for these good hundred yearsH
Has drunk the splendour and the sound of fightG
And the sweet sting of long since vanished fearsH
Then England come thou down with sterner lipsI
From the bright world of thy substantial powerA
Forget thy seas thy shipsI
And that wide echoing domeJ
To watch the soul of man in his dark hourA
Redeeming yet his dear lost land of homeJ
-
What place is this What under world of painK
All shadow barred with glare of swinging firesL
What writhing phantoms of the newly slainK
What cries What thirst consuming all desiresL
This is the field of battle not for lifeM
Not for the deeper life that dwells in loveN
Not for the savour of strifeM
Or the far call of fameO
Not for all these the fight all these aboveN
The soul of this man cherished Duty's nameO
-
His steadfast hope from self has turned awayP
For the Cause only must he still contendQ
How goes the day with us How goes the dayP
He craves not victory but to make an endQ
Therefore not yet thine hour O Death but whenR
The weapons forged against his country's peaceS
Lie broken round him thenR
Give him the kiss supremeT
Then let the tumult of his warfare ceaseS
And the last dawn dispel his anguished dreamT
