Northumberland Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCBCDEDE FDGDDHDH DDDDDIDI DJDJDEDE

The Old and BoldA
-
When England sets her banner forthB
And bids her armour shineC
She'll not forget the famous NorthB
The lads of moor and TyneC
And when the loving cup's in handD
And Honour leads the cryE
They know not old NorthumberlandD
Who'll pass her memory byE
-
When Nelson sailed for TrafalgarF
With all his country's bestD
He held them dear as brothers areG
But one beyond the restD
For when the fleet with heroes mannedD
To clear the decks beganH
The boast of old NorthumberlandD
He sent to lead the vanH
-
-
Himself by Victory's bulwarks stoodD
And cheered to see the sightD
That noble fellow CollingwoodD
How bold he goes to fightD
Love that the league of Ocean spannedD
Heard him as face to faceI
What would he give NorthumberlandD
To share our pride of placeI
-
The flag that goes the world aroundD
And flaps on every breezeJ
Has never gladdened fairer groundD
Or kinder hearts than theseJ
So when the loving cup's in handD
And Honour leads the cryE
They know not old NorthumberlandD
Who'll pass her memory byE
