We'll Go Down Ourselves Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFE GHHGG IJKJLEME DNONPEQE

What shall we do as years go byA
And Peace remains a strangerB
With Richmond yet in rebel handsC
And Washington in dangerB
What shall we do for leaders whenD
Old Age this race is croppingE
I asked whom I metF
And didn't it set them hoppingE
-
What shall we do What shall we doG
Why lay them on the shelvesH
And we'll go down ourselvesH
And teach the rebels something newG
And teach the rebels something newG
-
What shall we do when armies marchI
To storm the rebel quartersJ
If as of yore their marches endK
Beside Potomac's watersJ
May not we call our soldiers homeL
May not we think of stoppingE
I strove to frame the question fairM
But didn't it set them hoppingE
-
What shall we do when all the menD
For battle have enlistedN
And yet the rebels hold their groundO
And law is yet resistedN
Instead of doing as I shouldP
The theme politely droppingE
I ventured yet one question moreQ
Oh didn't it get them hoppingE
