The Song Of The Red Man Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCDCD DEFEGE HIHIJKJKLK JMJHNOPOPO

When the palefaces came in their whitewing'd canoesA
Long ago from the sun rising seaB
When they ask'd for a lodge and we did not refuseA
Happy then was the red man and freeB
He could then choose a spot for his wigwam to standC
Where the forest was crowded with gameD
For the blue rolling lake and the ever smiling landC
Were his own till the palefaces cameD
For the broad grassy plains and the forests deep and grandC
Were his own till the palefaces cameD
-
They came they came like the fierce prairie flameD
Sweeping on to the sun setting shoreE
Gazing now on its waves but a handful of bravesF
We shall join in the the chase nevermoreE
Till we camp on the plains where the Great Spirit reignsG
We shall join in the chase nevermoreE
-
We receiv'd them with gladness as Sons of the SkyH
We believ'd them of heavenly birthI
But alas to our sorrow we found by and byH
That like us they were born of the earthI
By their false traders wrong'd by their firewater craz'dJ
There was no one our braves to restrainK
So the swift flew and the tomahawk was raise'dJ
While we both mourn'd the blood of our slainK
So the smoke wreath did cease from the calumet of peaceL
While we both mourn'd the blood of our slainK
-
When the oaks pines and cedars were fell'd to the groundJ
'Twas a sight that with sorrow we sawM
For the game fled affrighted and no food was foundJ
For the old chief the papoose and squawH
Driven westward we came but the paleface was hereN
With his sharp axe and death flashing gunO
And his great iron horse is rumbling in the rearP
O my brave men your journey is doneO
Like the beaver and elk like the buffalo and deerP
O my brave men your journey is doneO
