The Prayer On The Pier Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFFF CCGCHIJI GKFKCLGL JCACFMJM

Proudly foats the ocean steamerA
Throngs aboard and on the pierB
With orders oaths and farewells mingledC
What a medley greats the earD
Off are cast the slack'ning cablesE
Eager bells their signals ringF
While there on shore a group is kneelingF
Looking upward now they singF
-
O Thou who holdestC
In the hollow of thy handC
All this vast oceanG
Unto this far off landC
Guard well we pray theeH
When angry billows foamI
Guard well our lov'd onesJ
And safely bring them homeI
-
What a wondrous transformationG
What a magic change of sceneK
The parted throngs transfix'd are gazingF
'Cross the gulf that grows betweenK
Heads are bared and knees are bendedC
Voices all are silent thereL
Save but the throbbing of the engineG
And that solemn choral prayerL
-
Rapidly the distance lenghensJ
We have looked our last adieuC
For each familiar form and featureA
Now is fading from our viewC
Glimpses yet of 'kerchiefs wavingF
Watching still our friends remainM
And waft by fresh'ning seaward breezesJ
Faintly sweetly comes the strainM
