The Old Village Doctor Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCCBADEFA ADGGA HHIGGIIDEFI IIJKKJLDEFI

In the village where he marriedA
Doctor Eldebury tarriedA
And for fourty years our people knew him wellB
How he listered us and bled usC
How with calomel he fed usC
Only I am living now to tellB
Though his drugs were deadly yet his heart was kindA
And with voice tuned cheerily and highD
It was quot Up now my little fellow livly's can beE
Come take your medicine like a little manF
And you'll feel better by and by quotA
-
Count the mossy marbles in the graveyardA
Our old doctor and his patients there they lieD
All regradless of the weatherG
They are waiting there togetherG
For that long sought quot better by and by quotA
-
Some physicians talk in LatinH
Some array their wives in satinH
As for our old doctor such was not his wayI
Gleaning fees of half a dollarG
Would you find a learn ed scholarG
'Mong the mountains riding night and dayI
Saddle bags behind him on his quot pale white horse quotI
To his far off patient see him flyD
Saying quot Up now my little fellow livly's can beE
Come take your medicine like a little manF
And you'll feel better by and by quotI
-
Oh the doses he inventedI
Us in youth he tormentedI
With his plasters and his powders and his pillsJ
Water for our thirst denyingK
Fevered though we were and dyingK
While the cool springs wasted from the hillsJ
Yet he thought no evil and he meant no harmL
We had faith yes hope when he came nighD
With his quot Up now my little fellow livly's can beE
Come take your medicine like a little manF
And you'll feel better by and by quotI
