The Girls At Home Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBCDED FGHGHDID JKLKLDMD

When the daylight fades on the tented fieldA
And the campfire cheerfully burnsB
Then the Soldier's thought like a carrier doveC
To his own love home returnsB
Like a carrier dove a carrier doveC
And gleams beyond the foamD
So a light springs up in the Soldier's heartE
As he thinks of the Girls at HomeD
-
When the shadows dance on the canvas wallsF
And the camp with melody ringsG
'Tis the good old song of the Stars and StripesH
That the fireside circle singsG
Of the Stars and Stripes the Stars and StripesH
For love of which they roamD
But the final song and the sweetest oneI
Is the song of the Girls at HomeD
-
Now the silver rays of a setting moonJ
Thru' the lofty sycamores creepK
And the fires burn low and the sentries watchL
O'er the arm ed host a sleepK
And the sentries watch the sentries watchL
Till morning gilds the domeD
Till the rattling drum shall the sleepers rouseM
From the dream of the Girls at HomeD
