Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD ECCDCFCCD CGCGCDCD CHCHCDCD

Childish foosteps just behind herA
Softly patter on the greenB
Back she glances tears may blind herA
But no little one is seenB
Blanched as by an ill appallingC
Home in terror hastens sheD
While a baby voice is callingC
Mother mother wait for meD
-
Phantom footsteps hear themE
falling falling fallingC
falling falling fallingC
Now wherever she may beD
hear footsteps fallingC
While a baby voice isF
call calling callingC
ing calling callingC
Mother mother wait for meD
-
Sobbing still but never laggingC
Soon she enters the gateG
And before her on the flaggingC
Sees the symbols of her fateG
Tiny shoeprints plainly speakingC
Of the salt and foamy seaD
Hark was that the doorhinge creakingC
Mother mother wait for meD
-
Half her night is spent in weepingC
Ere she can forget her caresH
Is there not an infant creepingC
Creeping slowly up the stairsH
Venturing thither in her yearningC
Only shadows can she seeD
But she hears the cry while turningC
Mother mother wait for meD
