King Bibler's Army Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFGE HIHIJDE KLMLNEGE GONOPEGE QRNRDEGE

It was ten years ago when the belle of the villageA
Gave here her hand to the young millionaireB
Every toungue even those of the bells in the steepleC
Saying Joy to the Heav'n blest pairB
She was sweet as the rosebud that blooms in the valleyD
He was manly and noble and braveE
Tell me where are they nowF
In the sad eyed processionG
Marching down down down to the graveE
-
Hark hark a pageant passesH
tramp tramp tramp trampI
I hear the tread of moving massesH
tramp tramp tramp trampI
O Heaven save our young menJ
'tis King Bibler's ArmyD
Marching down down down to the graveE
-
At the head of the boat are the dashing lieutenantsK
Who entice young recruits into lineL
Arm in arm three abreast they keep step with the musicM
Bearing goblets of blood red wineL
In the rear by and by we shall see them togetherN
As they stagger along on the paveE
With their wives and their children a rag robed processionG
Marching down down down to the graveE
-
From the front to the rear is the rule of promotionG
In the army King Bibler commandsO
And the pension is pov'rty disease and dishonorN
With a forfeit of home and landsO
So the friend that was treated to cordials and julepsP
Will be treated at last like a slaveE
As he fags at the end of the chaingang processionG
Marching down down down to the graveE
-
Would you fill up the ranks let your town send its quotaQ
Seventy thousand recruits must be foundR
For the gravediggers reckon they bury that numberN
Every year in the cold cold groundR
Yet the rest hobble on and the colors they carryD
Though in tatters triumphantly waveE
For they vanquish themselves in this madman's processionG
Marching down down down to the graveE
