My grand father's clock was too large for the shelfA
So it stood ninety years on the floorB
It was taller by half than the old man himselfA
Though it weighed not a penny weight moreB
It was bought on the morn of the day that he was bornC
And was always his treasure and prideD
But it stopp'd short never to go againE
When the old man diedD
-
Ninety years without slumbering tick tick tick tickF
His life seconds numbering tick tick tick tickF
It stopp'd short never to go againE
When the old man diedD
-
In watching its pendulum swing to and froG
Many hours had he spent while a boyH
And in childhood and manhood the clock seemed to knowG
And to share both his grief and his joyH
For it struck twenty four when he entered at the doorB
With a blooming and beautiful brideD
But it stopp'd short never to go againE
When the old man diedD
-
Ninety years without slumbering tick tick tick tickF
His life seconds numbering tick tick tick tickF
It stopp'd short never to go againE
When the old man diedD
-
My grandfather said that of those he could hireI
Not a servant so faithful he foundJ
For it wasted no time and had but one desireI
At the close of each week to be woundJ
And it kept in its place not a frown upon its faceK
And its hands never hung by its sideD
But it stopp'd short never to go againE
When the old man diedD
-
Ninety years without slumbering tick tick tick tickF
His life seconds numbering tick tick tick tickF
It stopp'd short never to go againE
When the old man diedD
-
It rang an alarm in the dead of the nightL
An alarm that for years had been dumbM
And we knew that his spirit was pluming for flightL
That his hour of departure had comeM
Still the clock kept the time with a soft and muffled chimeN
As we silently stood by his sideD
But it stopp'd short never to go againE
When the old man diedD
-
Ninety years without slumbering tick tick tick tickF
His life seconds numbering tick tick tick tickF
It stopp'd short never to go againE
When the old man diedD
