The Harvard Regiment Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFGF HIHI JKJK

We saw the Regiment alert and strongA
In marching line on Soldiers' Field todayB
Ah ready they to battle with the wrongA
This flower of youth eager and brave and gayB
-
And we on looking cheered them as they passedC
And we down heartened prayed a silent prayerD
Gazing upon them with a grim forecastC
And many a sad eyed mother watched them thereD
-
Proudly they turned and at attention stoodE
Or shouldered arms while war like music thrilledF
Alas we listened in unhappy moodG
Why should these boys in martial ways be skilledF
-
No comfort for our grieving was revealedH
Until we looked across the valiant lineI
To the old College far beyond this FieldH
That honors men who fell at Freedom's shrineI
-
Oh ancient College that so long hast bredJ
Son after son to heed his Country's callK
The answer to our questionings is readJ
In yonder Tower of your Memorial HallK
