The Harvard Regiment Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFGF HIHI JKJK| We saw the Regiment alert and strong | A |
| In marching line on Soldiers' Field today | B |
| Ah ready they to battle with the wrong | A |
| This flower of youth eager and brave and gay | B |
| - | |
| And we on looking cheered them as they passed | C |
| And we down heartened prayed a silent prayer | D |
| Gazing upon them with a grim forecast | C |
| And many a sad eyed mother watched them there | D |
| - | |
| Proudly they turned and at attention stood | E |
| Or shouldered arms while war like music thrilled | F |
| Alas we listened in unhappy mood | G |
| Why should these boys in martial ways be skilled | F |
| - | |
| No comfort for our grieving was revealed | H |
| Until we looked across the valiant line | I |
| To the old College far beyond this Field | H |
| That honors men who fell at Freedom's shrine | I |
| - | |
| Oh ancient College that so long hast bred | J |
| Son after son to heed his Country's call | K |
| The answer to our questionings is read | J |
| In yonder Tower of your Memorial Hall | K |
