| The warring tyrant's wife and growing daughter | F |
| Him spying from their hostile walls Alas | E |
| They sigh for fear the royal husband | G |
| Unskilled in warlike arts should dare attack | H |
| This lion fierce to touch whom bloody anger | F |
| Into the midst of slaughter has dragged back | H |
| 'Tis sweet and fit to perish for one's country | I |
| Death follows fast upon the man who flees | J |
| Nor spares the coward backs of youth retreating | K |
| Nor saves them trembling on their timid knees | J |
| Valor of shabby failure all unconscious | L |
| Gleams with untarnished honor where she stands | M |
| Assuming not nor laying down her emblems | N |
| As now the gaping populace demands | M |
| Valor when opening Heaven to those who dying | K |
| Deserve not death by paths no other knows | O |
| Points out the way and still while she is soaring | K |
| Her scorn for crowds and humid earth she shows | O |
| And there's a sure reward for loyal silence | P |
| Him I'll forbid under my roof to sit | Q |
| Who has divulged the Elusinian mysteries | J |
| Nor in my fragile shallop shall he flit | Q |
| Often great Jupiter when once neglected | R |
| The wicked near the innocent has put | S |
| But punishment to overtake the guilty | I |
| Has rarely failed though she is lame of foot | S |
