For nearly eighteen years upon my headA
The crown of Empire heavily has setB
The burden on my shoulders I have borneC
Of an estate encumbered far and wideD
With debts I had to pay Ah everywhereE
Murmurs revolts or wars assailed my throneF
Now quiet comes even in Britain hereG
The most disturbing Province of them allH
Yet I must go the profits I must leaveI
To others to enjoy to hold with easeJ
What I with bitter travail have obtainedK
Peace there must be and mutual amityL
The one support to hold the Empire firmM
To keep the Glory of the Empire brightN
Discord would be the ruin of the pileO
That my poor hands have built so painfullyL
Only when Peace prevails may we beholdP
How small things grow to greatnessQ
Now I dieR
And all the issue of the coming daysS
I leave to my successor and my sonT
Though he has been a cruel son to meL
Bassanius I name your EmperorU
The new made Antoninus who long triedD
To get that title by the swordV
Who sought my death the dangers knowing notW
That always must surround a diademX
Forgetting that the places of the greatY
Are guarded well by Envy and by FearZ
Blind is ambition for it cannot seeL
That though a sovereign's power large may seemA2
To others by himself the things possessedB2
Are counted small enough aye small theyareZ
For titles cannot make a happy manC2
While his thin thread of life must waver soD2
His might is laid upon a weak supportE2
So men may point to me and say 'BeholdE2
A man who once was all things in this worldE2
Yet now is nothing For like meaner menF2
He paid his debt to nature His exploitsG2
He left behind ' Aye friends I leave my deedsH2
For you to register Reproach or praiseS
The shadowing pencil of oblivionT
At last will blot And yet that all the careZ
That I have taken for the general goodE2
May bring forth happy fruits when I am dustE2
This would I make my one my last requestE2
Assist my sons with counsel and with aidE2
That they may rule according to the lawI2
And you obey according to the rightE2
So through you both my legions and my sonsJ2
The Empire shall be held in high respectE2
-
And then the dying Emperor feebly turnedE2
Toward the urn wherein so soon must lieR
His ashes and he cried So shalt thou holdE2
What the whole world one time could not containK2
Thus died SeverusJ2
