For thee he thoughtA
The Greek who by the seaB
Lay in his lithe limbed grace as dreamilyC
He gazed upon the sky begemmed with starsD
And pondered mysteries Ah few the barsD
To stop that lofty spirit in its flightE
Compared with those that lock our souls in nightE
For thee he thoughtA
For thee he wroughtA
The Tyrian who of oldF
His rich web wove of purple dye and goldF
Whose little bark outstanding many a stormG
To ruder lands the spirit and the formG
Of Eastern culture bore Ah what we oweH
To him today let sage and poet showH
For thee he wroughtA
For thee he foughtA
The Saxon who upheldI
The freedom of our race whose broad ax felledI
Imperial legions in the forest dimJ
Where loud his war cry rang a noble hymnJ
For manhood's victory over regal prideK
On the sad day when mighty Varus diedK
For thee he foughtA
For thee He taughtA
The Nazarene who boreL
The burden of the world who by the shoreL
Of Galilee His words of wisdom spakeM
Whose life a pattern for our life we'd takeM
Whose words re echoing to remotest timeN
Shall lead us on toward a height sublimeN
For thee He taughtA
Man man thou heir of all the ages thouO
Man of today uplift thy drooping browO
Think work fight teach thine heritage pass onP
Tenfold increased He'll reap who has foregoneQ
Life's little limited delights in measureR
As selfless he has sown his earthly treasureR
