Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGHGIJK LMLMNONOPK QRQSTUTUVK| Today I had the awfulest time | A |
| Dear mother in the wood | B |
| That hill out there we were to climb | A |
| And we'd been very good | B |
| But nurse was walking up the hill | C |
| When little Anne and I | D |
| We had to stop and stand quite still | C |
| And Anne began to cry | D |
| - | |
| For something moved behind the trees | E |
| We felt so all alone | F |
| Said I to Anne Stop crying please | E |
| I'll hit it with a stone | F |
| Cried Anne Oh listen hear it growl | G |
| Said I I'm not afraid | H |
| Of bears or lions Now don't scowl | G |
| You look so cross she said | I |
| So then I had to smile and smile for Anne was crying all the while | J |
| And if we didn'thear a bear I'm sure dear mother one was there | K |
| - | |
| Boys always must take care of girls | L |
| You see you've told me so | M |
| That's why I tried to pat Anne's curls | L |
| And walked with her real slow | M |
| But when we heard nurse calling out | N |
| Come children come along | O |
| Come Nurse you should have heard me shout | N |
| Anne says my voice is strong | O |
| Run Anne I cried I'm almost five and I'll kill any bear alive | P |
| And if we didn'tsee a bear I truly think that one was there | K |
| - | |
| How glad I was when Nurse turn'd round | Q |
| For everything seemed queer | R |
| The trees looked strange and then that sound | Q |
| We didn't like to hear | S |
| Nurse laughed when we had told her all | T |
| About the bear we saw | U |
| I came as quick's I heard you call | T |
| And it's against the law | U |
| For bears to live where people stay They are five hundred miles away | V |
| But if we didn'tmeet a bear I'm sure thatalmost one was there | K |
