New Year's Morning Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCDEFEEEGEGHIHI AEAE AJAJKLKLAMAM

Only a night from old to newA
Only a night and so much wroughtB
The Old Year's heart all weary grewA
But said The New Year rest has broughtB
The Old Year's hopes its heart laid downC
As in a grave but trusting saidD
The blossoms of the New Year's crownC
Bloom from the ashes of the deadD
The Old Year's heart was full of greedE
With selfishness it longed and achedF
And cried I have not half I needE
My thirst is bitter and unslakedE
But to the New Year's generous handE
All gifts in plenty shall returnG
True love it shall understandE
By all y failures it shall learnG
I have been reckless it shall beH
Quiet and calm and pure of lifeI
I was a slave it shall go freeH
And find sweet pace where I leave strifeI
-
Only a night from old to newA
Never a night such changes broughtE
The Old Year had its work to doA
No New Year miracles are wroughtE
-
Always a night from old to newA
Night and the healing balm of sleepJ
Each morn is New Year's morn come trueA
Morn of a festival to keepJ
All nights are sacred nights to makeK
Confession and resolve and prayerL
All days are sacred days to wakeK
New gladness in the sunny airL
Only a night from old to newA
Only a sleep from night to mornM
The new is but the old coem trueA
Each sunrise sees a new year bornM
