My body eh Friend Death how nowA
Why all this tedious pomp of writB
Thou hast reclaimed it sure and slowC
For half a century bit by bitB
-
In faith thou knowest more to dayD
Than I do where it can be foundE
This shrivelled lump of suffering clayD
To which I am now chained and boundE
-
Has not of kith or kin a traceF
To the good body once I boreG
Look at this shrunken ghastly faceF
Didst ever see that face beforeG
-
Ah well friend Death good friend thou artH
Thy only fault thy lagging gaitI
Mistaken pity in thy heartH
For timorous ones that bid thee waitI
-
Do quickly all thou hast to doJ
Nor I nor mine will hindrance makeK
I shall be free when thou art throughJ
I grudge thee nought that thou must takeK
-
Stay I have lied I grudge thee oneL
Yes two I grudge thee at this lastM
Two members which have faithful doneL
My will and bidding in the pastM
-
I grudge thee this right hand of mineN
I grudge thee this quick beating heartH
They never gave me coward signN
Nor played me once the traitor's partH
-
I see now why in olden daysO
Men in barbaric love or hateI
Nailed enemies' hands at wild crosswaysO
Shrined leaders' hearts in costly stateI
-
The symbol sign and instrumentP
Of each soul's purpose passion strifeQ
Of fires in which are poured and spentR
Their all of love their all of lifeQ
-
O feeble mighty human handS
O fragile dauntless human heartH
The universe holds nothing plannedS
With such sublime transcendent artH
-
Yes Death I own I grudge thee mineN
Poor little hand so feeble nowA
Its wrinkled palm its altered lineN
Its veins so pallid and so slowC
-
Unfinished hereT
-
Ah well friend Death good friend thou artH
I shall be free when thou art throughJ
Take all there is take hand and heartH
There must be somewhere work to doJ
