Now since mine even is come at lastA
For I have been the sport of steelB
And hot life ebbeth from me fastA
And I in saddle roll and reelB
Come bind me bind me on my steedC
Of fingering leech I have no needC
The chaplain clasped his mail egrave d kneeD
Nor need I more thy whine and theeD
No time is left my sins to tellE
But look ye bind me bind me wellE
They bound him strong with leathern thongF
For the ride to the lady should be longF
-
Day was dying the poplars fledG
Thin as ghosts on a sky blood redG
Out of the sky the fierce hue fellE
And made the streams as the streams of hellE
All his thoughts as a river flowedH
Flowed aflame as fleet he rodeH
Onward flowed to her abodeH
Ceased at her feet mirrored her faceI
Viewless Death apace apaceI
Rode behind him in that raceI
-
Face mine own mine aloneJ
Trembling lips my lips have knownJ
Birdlike stir of the dove soft eyneJ
Under the kisses that make them mineJ
Only of thee of thee my needC
Only to thee to thee I speedC
The Cross flashed by at the highway's turnJ
In a beam of the moon the Face shone sternJ
-
Far behind had the fight's din diedK
The shuddering stars in the welkin wideK
Crowded crowded to see him rideK
The beating hearts of the stars aloofL
Kept time to the beat of the horse's hoofL
What is the throb that thrills so sweetM
Heart of my lady I feel it beatM
But his own strong pulse the fainter fellE
Like the failing tongue of a hushing bellE
The flank of the great limbed steed was wetN
Not alone with the started sweatN
-
Fast and fast and the thick black woodO
Arched its cowl like a black friar's hoodO
Fast and fast and they plunged thereinJ
But the viewless rider rode to winJ
-
Out of the wood to the highway's lightP
Galloped the great limbed steed in frightP
The mail clashed cold and the sad owl criedK
And the weight of the dead oppressed his sideK
-
Fast and fast by the road he knewJ
And slow and slow the stars withdrewJ
And the waiting heaven turned weirdly blueJ
As a garment worn of a wizard grimQ
He neighed at the gate in the morning dimQ
-
She heard no sound before her gateR
Though very quiet was her bowerS
All was as her hand had left it lateR
The needle slept on the broidered vineJ
Where the hammer and spikes of the passion flowerS
Her fashioning did waitR
-
On the couch lay something fairT
With steadfast lips and veil egrave d eyneJ
But the lady was not thereT
On the wings of shrift and prayerT
Pure as winds that winnow snowJ
Her soul had risen twelve hours agoJ
The burdened steed at the barred gate stoodO
No whit the nearer to his goalU
Now God's great grace assoil the soulU
That went out in the woodO
