The Story Of A Dirty Child Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCC DD EEFFGGHH IIJJ KKAAAALL MNOO

The little girls whom now you'll seeA
Were sisters in one familyA
And both enjoyed an equal shareB
Of a kind mother's anxious careB
This one in neatness took a prideC
And oft the brush and comb appliedC
-
-
Oft washed her face and oft her handsD
See now thus occupied she standsD
-
-
The other oh I grieve to sayE
How she would scream and run awayE
Soon as she saw her mother standF
With water by and sponge in handF
She'd kick and stamp and jump aboutG
And set up such an awful shoutG
That one who did not know the childH
Would say she must be going wildH
-
-
In consequence it came to passI
While one was quite a pretty lassI
And many a fond admirer gainedJ
And many a little gift obtainedJ
-
-
The other viewed with general scornK
Was left forsaken and forlornK
For no one can endure to seeA
A child all dirt and miseryA
Behold how needful 'tis that weA
Should clean in dress and person beA
Or else believe me 'tis in vainL
We hope affection to obtainL
-
-
A sloven will be always viewedM
With pity by the wise and goodN
While ev'n the vicious and the baseO
Behold with scorn a dirty faceO
