Phoebe Ann, The Proud Girl Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AA BB CCDDEEFF GGHHIIJJ KLDD

This Phoebe Ann was a very proud girlA
Her nose had always an upward curlA
-
-
She thought herself better than all others besideB
And beat even the peacock himself in prideB
-
-
She thought the earth was so dirty and brownC
That never by chance would she look downC
And she held up her head in the air so highD
That her neck began stretching by and byD
It stretched and it stretched and it grew so longE
That her parents thought something must be wrongE
It stretched and stretched and they soon beganF
To look up with fear at their Phoebe AnnF
-
-
They prayed her to stop her upward gazeG
But Phoebe kept on in her old proud waysG
Until her neck had grown so long and spareH
That her head was more than her neck could bearH
And it bent to the ground like a willow treeI
And brought down the head of this proud PhoebeI
Until whenever she went out a walk to takeJ
The boys would shout Here comes a snakeJ
-
-
Her head got to be so heavy to drag onK
That she had to put it on a little wagonL
So don't my friends hold your head too highD
Or your neck may stretch too by and byD
