Amid the forest verdant shadeA
A peaceful river flowedB
Wild flowers their home on its banks had madeA
The sunbeam's rays on its breast were laidA
When the light of morning glowedB
-
By its marge the wolf had found a lairC
He roamed through each lonely spotD
That deep designer the beaver thereC
Built his palace the shaggy bearC
In the tall tree had his cotD
-
And voices sweet were heard on the bankE
Of the river's gentle flowF
The whip poor will sang when the sun had sankE
And the hum drum bee to his home had shrankE
When the wind of eve did blowF
-
The tree frog joined with his sonorous callG
The grasshopper chirped alongH
The dormice came out of their underground holeI
The squirrels peeped over their pine tree wallG
To list to the revel songH
-
Nothing disturbed the murmur deepJ
Of the river broad and fairC
No one awoke it from peaceful sleepJ
Save when floating mice o'er its breast would creepJ
Or the rusty coated bearC
-
One morn the sound of an axe was heardK
In the forest dark and loneL
Then started with fear the beasts disturbedM
Their reign was broke at the woodman's wordK
And they scowled with anger onN
-
On the river's brink the emigrant's childO
Passed all his lonely hoursP
He laughed when he ruffled the bosom mildO
Of the flowing streamlet so bright and wildO
As it bore his boon of flowersP
-
Soon the throng of the forest heard the hornQ
Of the boat the commerce boatR
Then they started up from the brake and thornQ
And hastening away by the light of the mornQ
They fled from cavern and moatR
-
And the bird peeped out of a pine tree towerS
And shrank away at the sightT
The humming bird fled to his rose hung bowerS
The bright bee curled himself snug in a flowerS
O'ertaken by fear and frightT
-
And the river which rolled for ages stillU
In a gentle flow unrivenQ
Now bears on its bosom by man's proud willU
By the arts of industry and skillU
The blessings to mortals givenQ
-
Over its billows the steamboats treadV
With their waters rushing highW
Or the snowy sail to the wind is spreadV
As the noble bark on her way is spedV
To the crowded city nighW
-
Oh river bright we sail over thy breastX
Once bearing wood runners wildO
But the birds who built on the bank their nestX
Have fled long ago to the boundless westX
From thee and from man exiledO
