Cities and men and nations have passed byA
Like leaves upon an autumn's dreary skyA
Like chaff upon the ocean billow proudB
Like drops of rain on summer's fleecy cloudB
Like flowers of a wildernessC
Vanished into forgetfulnessC
-
O Nineveh thou city of young Ashur's prideD
With thy strong towers and thy bulwarks wideD
Ah while upon thee splashed the Tigris' watersC
How little thought thy wealth stored sons and daughtersC
-
That Cyaxerses and his troops should waitE
Three long years before thy massive gateE
Then Medes and Persians by the torches' lightF
Should ride triumphantly thy streets by nightF
And from creation banish theeG
O Nineveh O NinevehH
-
And country of the pride of Mizriam's heartI
With pyramids that speak thy wealth and artI
Why is it that no minstrel comes who singsC
Of all the glory of thy shepherd kingsC
Tyre why are thy walls in ruins thusC
Why is thy name so seldom spoke by usC
Sidon among the nations thou art fledJ
Thy joy departed and thy glory deadJ
Far gone ere all thy generationsC
Fallen nations Fallen nationsC
-
And Babylon with all thy thronging bandsC
The glory of Chaldea's ancient landsC
Thy temple where a numerous host was seenK
Thy gardens hung to please the Midian queenK
Where beauteous flowers smiled on their terrace bedsC
Proud kings have passed through thee and crowned headsC
And grandeur and magnificence could viewL
In thee a resting place thy stores not fewL
Why is it thou art all aloneM
O Babylon O BabylonN
-
And Greece who shone in literature and mightF
When Marathon's broad plains saw sword and fightF
Thy monumental ruins stand aloneM
Decay has breathed upon thy sculptured stoneM
And desolation walks thy princely hallsC
The green branch twines around thy olden wallsC
And ye who stood the ten years' siege of TroyO
Time's fingers now your battlements annoyO
Why is it that thy glories ceaseC
O Classic Greece O Classic GreeceC
-
And thou best city of olden timeP
O we might weep for thee once chosen climeP
City where Solomon his temple rearedQ
City where gold and silver stores appearedQ
City where priest and prophet lowly kneltR
City where God in mortal flesh once dweltR
Titus and Roman soldiers laid thee lowS
The music in thy streets has ceased to flowS
Yet wilt thou not return in joy once moreT
And Lebanon give up her cedar storeT
And vines and olives smile as now they smileU
Yet not upon the ruin of a holy pileU
Wilt thou Destruction's flood not stemP
Jerusalem JerusalemP
-
Cities and men and nations have gone byA
Like leaves upon an Autumn's dreary skyA
Like chaff upon the ocean billow proudB
Like drops upon the summer's passing cloudB
Like flowers of a wildernessC
Vanished into forgetfulnessC
