Where is God my Maker Who giveth songs in the night BibleA
-
The hour of midnight had swept pastB
The city bell tolled threeC
The moon had sank behind the cloudsD
No rustling in the treeC
All all was silent as the graveE
And memories of the tombF
Had banished sweet sleep far awayG
All spoke of tears and gloomF
-
When suddenly upon the airH
Rang out a sweet bird's songI
No feeble weak uncertain noteJ
No plaint of grief or wrongI
No Miserere DomineC
No Dies Irea sadK
But Gloria in Excelsis rangL
In accents wild and gladK
-
How could he sing a birdling cagedM
And in the dark aloneN
And then methought that he had seenO
Some vision from God's throneN
The little birdling's eyes were brightP
While mine with tears were dimQ
Had some bright watcher glided byR
And spake in joy to himQ
-
Then I remembered what Christ saidS
The God of love's dear SonT
Not one of these small birds forgotU
Beneath the glorious sunT
They have no load of grief to bearH
Of sin no dark deep stainV
And yet in patience take their shareH
Of storm and frost and rainV
-
Oh can it be unknown to usW
Without one human wordX
The universal Father soothesY
The death bed of each birdX
The whole creation groaneth yetZ
These pure things of the skyR
Are they not nearer to the gatesA2
Than mortals such as IR
-
Yet while I mused it seemed some formB2
Ere yet I was awareH
Bent o'er my pillow dried my tearsC2
And turned to sing my prayerH
Some subtle presence unrevealedZ
Seemed to repeat the wordsD2
Fear not for you are dearer farE2
Than many little birdsD2
-
I do not ask what seemed to speakF2
Whether the angel blestZ
Who hath been my appointed guardZ
In calm or wild unrestZ
Or whether some sweet voice I loveG2
But hushed to me a whileH2
Came down on gentle mission sentZ
To change for tears a smileH2
-
It matters not God knows faith's wingsI2
Droop sometimes in the dustZ
And hands grow weak and lose their holdZ
On Hope's firm anchor trustZ
And so while sending dew and rainV
And glowing sunbeams brightZ
God giveth unto those who hearJ2
Songs in the darkest nightZ
