I heard the voice of the Death Angel speakA
As slowly he pass'd me byB
And I saw him throw snow on the crimson cheekA
And darken the laughing eyeB
I saw him glide down through many a streetC
Tears followed him like spring rainD
And yet ever unheeding tears or prayersE
He mattered his wild wild refrainD
Come away with me sweet baby so brightF
I love the young flowers of the rosebud's hueG
What mother would keep thee always in sightF
And see the sad tears in those eyes so blueG
Come with me little oneH
All thorns and crosses for you are doneH
Mother will meet thee where all is fairI
Grown to the height of the angels thereI
Quiet and deepJ
Be now thy sleepJ
Baby so whiteF
-
For thou shalt travel where sorrow and strifeK
Never shall darken thy pathway againL
Azael must take home to the Lord of LifeK
The darlings He bought on the cross with painD
Ah you smile little oneH
Pleasure and glory for you are wonH
Near to the angels you're not afraidM
Of going with me far into the shadeM
The casket grows coldN
The jewel I holdN
For hearts of loveO
-
Come along with me thou trader in goldN
Many have turned from thy office to dayP
Thou hast no time to consider the claimQ
Of the wronged or helpless who crossed thy wayP
You shudder trembling oneH
Close up the ledger business is doneH
Let you stay till your vessel comes inR
I'll take you far from the market's dinR
And you'll have timeS
In that strange climeS
To meditateT
-
For thou wilt awaken I would not holdN
If I could the past from memory's kenL
I fancy that other ledgers unfoldN
Their pages for some of you business menL
Rest to night tired oneH
Not half of your merchandise is doneH
The steamers the banks the corn exchangeU
No Azael deals not in notes or changeU
He keeps no goldN
In his fingers coldN
He takes no bribeV
-
Come along with me sweet lady so fairI
Who told thee I was so grim and so coldN
Know you that I covet that sunny hairI
And those delicate arms's caressing foldN
Fear me not gentle oneH
What if the hymn and the task are doneH
In my arms there is far calmer restW
Then thou wilt find on thy lover's breastW
Sleep sleep for awhileX
Then waken to smileX
Ever and ayeB
-
True life is progressive my lady fairI
And thou wilt re open those radiant eyesY
Think you that I have no burden of careI
Azael has to account for each prizeY
Banish doubt gentle oneH
Quicksands and pitfalls for thee are all doneH
Human love may ere long deceive theeZ
But Azael's love will never leave theeZ
Till those earth dim eyesY
Look on ParadiseA2
Never to weepJ
-
The song of Azael melted awayP
On the solemn midnight's bieathZ
I thought of the talents the oilless lampsB2
Oh Azael Angel of DeathZ
I know that ere long thou wilt come for meZ
Immanuel Lord of lifeK
By Thy victory gained on the bitter crossC2
Save in that hour of strifeK
