They are gone awayA
No prayers could avail us to longer keepB
The ships called out on the unknown deepB
We saw them sail off some lingeringlyC
Some suddenly summoned put out to seaD
They stepped aboard and the planks were drawn inE
But their sweet pale faces were free from sinE
As they turned to whisper one last good byeF
We sent after each one a bitter cryF
We knew on that trackG
They would never come backG
By night or dayA
-
Ah we've closed dear eyesH
But God be thanked that they one and allC
Had the heaven light touch them before the pallC
They saw the fair land that we could not seeD
And one said Jesus is standing by meD
And one The water of life I hearI
And one There's no suffering nor sorrow hereI
One I have seen the city of countless charmsJ
One 'Neath me are the Everlasting ArmsJ
So we know it is bestK
They should be at restK
In God's paradiseL
-
Mary's Blessed SonM
Thou wilt not chide if thou see'st that lowC
Our harps are hanging on willow boughN
We would not murmur we know it is wellC
They are gone from the battle the shot and shellC
And in our anguish we're not aloneO
The Father knows all the grief we have knownO
Oh God who once heard the Christ's bitter cryF
Thou knowest what we feel when we see them dieF
Our light has been hidP
By the coffin lidP
And dark our noonQ
-
God hears our moanO
He knows how a stricken heart had saidR
Oh number her not with the silent deadR
For if she stays watching the golden seaD
God help for what will become of meD
The last rose out of my childhood's bowerS
From my English garden the last sweet flowerS
Take me instead for none call me motherS
The messenger said I take no otherS
So she went the roadT
The others have trodU
And I am aloneO
-
We shall meet againV
I fancy sometimes how they talk togetherS
Of the way they travelled the stormy weatherS
That beat so hard on their pilgrim roadT
Now changed for the city of their GodU
I wonder if in their special homeW
They keep choice rooms till their darlings comeX
Saviour who loves them protect and guide meD
Where they are waiting 'neath life's fadeless treeD
Father and motherS
And elder brotherS
And sisters twainY
