We were wearied in the battleA
Tempted and pained and triedB
By day the din and the carnageC
By night the rain's fierce tideB
But we heard a loving messageD
From the Prince's tent it cameE
Each meet in the banqueting houseF
In memory of my nameE
-
We gathered a motley regimentG
Some young in the war of lifeH
Some chiefs in the Royal ArmyI
Some old and sick with strifeH
Some limped in the sacred pathwayJ
Some were foot sore and wornK
Some had their lances all shiveredL
Some had their banners tornK
-
And we all looked dim and dustyI
We all were stained with sinM
But we held the Prince's messageD
And the porter said Come inM
We went to the banqueting houseF
We sat at the Prince's boardN
There we polished each his helmetO
We sharpened each his swordN
-
Our Prince we talked of his strifeH
The forlorn hope He had ledP
How He opened the gates of lifeH
And rescued from Death the deadP
And with Him we saw a bright hostQ
Our comrades gone on beforeR
The right wing of our armyI
Upon the farther shoreR
-
And the festering wound was healedS
The banners were made wholeT
Mists rolled back from the almost blindU
Faith lit each warrior's soulT
We drank of the fruit of the vineV
We ate the living breadP
The holy benediction fellW
With healing on each headP
-
We entered in poor worn soldiersX
We came out bolder knightsY
To march on to the Prince's battleA
And war for His glorious rightsY
For had we not each re takenZ
The oath of allegiance highA2
And sworn round the Royal StandardL
To conquer or to dieA2
