A new born babe was sleepingA
Within its cradle fairB
And angel guards were keepingA
Its peaceful slumbers thereB
-
Gone was the age of fairiesC
And of the elfins wildD
Who hovering o'er the infant's couchE
Were wont to bless the childD
-
But in a distant cityF
Fays that still glad the earthG
Four gentle little childrenH
Hailed with delight his birthG
-
Out spake the eldest sisterI
O let us fairies playJ
And give to our young brotherI
Some precious gift to dayJ
-
Sit down around the firesideK
And I my gift will tellL
And the little children sat them downM
The fancy pleased them wellL
-
Again thus spake the eldestN
I 'll give him beauty rareB
His eyes shall be as diamonds brightO
His brow like marble fairB
-
He shall have golden ringletsC
His cheeks shall mock the roseC
And he shall be the loveliestO
Where'er his light form goesC
-
The next replied Oh sisterI
Not such a gift is mineP
For beauty's charms though lovelyF
Must perish and declineP
-
I'll give him wit and talentsC
In manhood he shall standO
Among the gifted and the wiseC
That bless our native landO
-
I'll give him sweet good temperI
Said the third loving childO
He shall make glad our happy homeQ
By actions kind and mildO
-
The youngest raised her wondering eyesC
And said in accents lowR
I thought the gift I chose would beF
The first that you 'd bestowR
-
I'll give our little brotherI
Obedience to dayO
And he shall mind with cheerfulnessC
All that our parents sayC
-
Oh blessed is the childish heartO
In life's first opening dawnS
For all its high and holy thoughtsC
From heavenly founts are drawnS
-
May our most valued blessings beF
Obedience and loveT
Our hearts like that sweet sister's fullU
Of teachings from aboveT
