I was walking dearest motherA
This morning by the brookB
And tired at last I rested meC
Within a shady nookB
-
There all was still and lonelyC
And suddenly I heardD
A little voice a sweeter oneE
Than note of any birdD
-
I looked above around meC
I saw not whence it cameF
And yet that tone of musicG
Was calling me by nameF
-
The violet beside meC
Bloomed with its purple cupH
And a tiny face so lovelyC
Amidst its leaves peeped upH
-
Again the silver musicG
The voice I loved to hearI
Upon its sweet breath floatedJ
And bade me not to fearK
-
'I am the elf ' it whisperedD
'Who in the violet dwellsL
And every blossom hides oneE
Within its fragrant cellsL
-
'If you will list our teachingM
And catch our faintest toneN
Your heart will be as spotlessO
As loving as our own '-
-
And then as I was gazingM
It vanished from my sightP
Once more the violet noddedJ
And sought the sunshine brightP
-
My darling child the elfinsO
That live within the flowersO
Sweet sounds are ever breathingM
To glad this world of oursO
-
Well may we weep and sorrowQ
If they are silent allR
Then are our souls too sinfulS
To heed their spirit callR
-
The pure in heart alone can hearI
Those precious words and lowQ
And by their lessons purer yetT
Throughout their lives shall growQ
