Come hither little brothersA
And listen now to meB
And I will read a storyB
To both while at my kneeB
-
Then Johnnie's flag hung idlyB
And Charlie hushed his drumC
To hear sweet Mary's storyB
The mimic soldiers comeC
-
'Tis of a boy no largerD
My little Charles than youE
But he had been in battleF
And all its terrors knewE
-
His father was a captainG
He had no child besideH
And while he was an infantI
His mother dear had diedH
-
And so from camp to battleF
From fight to camp againJ
Had lived this little heroK
On many a bloody plainL
-
One day when shouts were loudestM
Upon the reddened fieldN
When came the victor's war cryO
'See see they fly they yield '-
-
Forth then to seek his fatherD
He went with eager joyP
But with a chance ball woundedQ
Low lay the fearless boyP
-
The son of a brave chieftainG
He made no sigh or groanR
His father's hand yet tighterD
He clasped within his ownR
-
And so when strife was endedQ
No more to be begunG
In conquest's very momentI
Thus fell the chieftain's sonG
-
Then John took out his featherD
And put his flag awayS
And Charlie's drum was silentI
Until another dayS
