The Urban Rat And The Suburban Rat Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCB AAAADDA DEDEAAE FGFGDDG HIHIBBI IJIJIIJ CKCKDDL MNMNDDN

A metropolitan rat invitedA
His country cousin in town to dineB
The country cousin replied DelightedA
And signed himself Sincerely thineB
The town rat treated the country cousinC
To half a dozenC
Kinds of wineB
-
He served him terrapin kidneys devilledA
And roasted partridge and candied fruitA
In Little Neck Clams at first they revelledA
And then in Pommery sec and brutA
The country cousin exclaimed Such feedingD
Proclaims your breedingD
Beyond disputeA
-
But just as another bottle broachingD
They came to chicken en casseroleE
A ravenous cat was heard approachingD
And passing his guest a finger bowlE
The town rat murmured The feast is endedA
And then descendedA
The nearest holeE
-
His cousin followed him helter skelterF
And pausing beneath the pantry floorG
He glanced around at their dusty shelterF
And muttered This is a beastly boreG
My place as an epicure resigningD
I'll try this diningD
In town no moreG
-
You must dine some night at my rustic cottageH
I'll warn you now that it's simple fareI
A radish or two a bowl of pottageH
And the wine that's known as ordinaireI
But for holes I haven't to make a bee lineB
No prowling felineB
Molests me thereI
-
You smile at the lot of a mere commuterI
You think that my life is hard mayhapJ
But I'm sure than you I am far acuterI
I ain't afraid of no cat nor trapJ
The city rat could but meekly stammerI
Don't use such grammarI
My worthy chapJ
-
He dined next night with his poor relationC
And caught dyspepsia and lost his trainK
He waited an hour in the lonely stationC
And said some things that were quite profaneK
I'll never he cried in tones complainingD
Try entertainingD
That rat againL
-
It's easy to make a memorandumM
About THE MORAL these verses teachN
De gustibus non est dispuiandumM
The meaning of which Etruscan speechN
Is wheresoever you're hunger quellingD
Pray keep your dwellingD
In easy reachN
