A rooster once pursued a wormA
That lingered not to brave himB
To see his wretched victim squirmA
A pleasant thrill it gave himB
He summoned all his kith and kinC
They hastened up by legionsD
With quaint expressive gurgles inC
Their oesophageal regionsD
-
Just then a kind of glimmeringE
Attracting his attentionF
The worm became too small a thingE
For more than passing mentionF
The throng of hungry hens and rudeG
He skilfully evadedH
Said he I' faith if this be foodG
I saw the prize ere they didH
-
It was a large and costly pearlI
Belonging in a necklaceJ
And dropped by some neglectful girlI
Some people are so recklessJ
The cock assumed an air forlornK
And cried It's really cruelL
I thought it was a grain of cornK
It's nothing but a jewelL
-
He turned again to where his clanM
In one astounding tangleL
With eager haste together ranM
To slay the helpless angleL
And sighed He was of massive sizeN
I should have used discretionF
Too late Around the toothsome prizeN
A bargain sale's in sessionF
-
The worm's remarks upon his plightO
Have never been recordedP
But any one may know how slightO
Diversion it affordedP
For worms and human beings areQ
Unanimous that when peckedP
To be the prey of men they farQ
Prefer to being hen peckedP
-
THE MORAL When your dinner comesR
Don't leave it for your neighborsS
Because you hear the sound of drumsR
And see the gleam of sabresS
Or like the cock you'll find too lateP
That ornaments externalL
Do not for certain indicateP
A bona fide kernelL
