From Darius Boland, y'r honour, answered Michael, with a smile. "Who is Darius Boland, you're askin' in y'r mind? Well, he's the new manager come from the Llyn plantations in Virginia; and right good stuff he is, with a tongue that's as dry as cut-wheat in August. And there's humour in him, plenty-aye, plenty. When did I see him, and how? Well, I saw him this mornin', on the quay at Kingston. He was orderin' the porters about with an air--oh, bedad, an air! I saw the name upon the parcels-- Miss Sheila Llyn, of Moira, Virginia, and so I spoke to him. The rest was aisy.

Gilbert Parker Books, Gilbert Parker poetry book The Judgment House Authors: Gilbert Parker

Published Date: 2006-03-01
Categories: Fiction
1913. Part Eighteen of Eighteen Volumes. Gilbert, Canadian-born novelist and politician, his literary reputation lies primarily on his earlier descriptive, dramatic and historic Canadian stories. He moved to England in 1889 and later served in Parliament. Parker explains that in this edition of his work, each volume will have a special introduction setting forth, as far as possible, the relation of each work to the author, to its companion works, and to the scheme of his literary life. The Judgment House is set in South Africa during a time of war and Parker tries to get the atmosphere of the country into the book from the first page, and to have the South African note beat through every chapter, like the motif in the overture of an opera, so that the reader will be caught by it long before the story shifts below the Zambesi. Eugene Field Poem
Suppose
 by Eugene Field

Suppose, my dear, that you were I
And by your side your sweetheart sate;
Suppose you noticed by and by
The distance 'twixt you were too great;
Now tell me, dear, what would you do?
I know-and so do you.

And when (so comfortably placed)
