The Wood-cutter Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DAEA BFGF HIJI KLML NOPO

We came behind him by the wallA
My brethren drew their brandsB
And they had strength to strike him downC
And I to bind his handsB
-
Only once to a lantern gleamD
He turned his face from the wallA
And it was as the accusing angel's faceE
On the day when the stars shall fallA
-
I grasped the axe with shaking handsB
I stared at the grass I trodF
For I feared to see the whole bare heavensG
Filled with the face of GodF
-
I struck the serpentine slow bloodH
In four arms soaked the mossI
Before me by the living ChristJ
The blood ran in a crossI
-
Therefore I toil in forests hereK
And pile the wood in stacksL
And take no fee from the shivering folkM
Till I have cleansed the axeL
-
But for a curse God cleared my sightN
And where each tree doth growO
I see a life with awful eyesP
And I must lay it lowO
