The wasting thistle whitens on my crestA
The barren grasses blow upon my spearB
A green pale pennon blazon of wild faithC
And love of fruitless things yea of my loveD
Among the golden loves of all the knightsE
Alone most hopeless sweet and blasphemousF
The love of GodG
I hear the crumbling creedsH
Like cliffs washed down by water change and passI
I hear a noise of words age after ageJ
A new cold wind that blows across the plainsK
And all the shrines stand empty and to meL
All these are nothing priests and schools may doubtM
Who never have believed but I have lovedN
Ah friends I know it passing well the loveD
Wherewith I love it shall not bring to meL
Return or hire or any pleasant thingO
Ay I have tried it Ay I know its rootsP
Earthquake and plague have burst on it in vainQ
And rolled back shatteredR
Babbling neophytesE
Blind startled fools think you I know it notS
Think you to teach me Know I not His waysT
Strange visaged blunders mystic crueltiesU
All all I know Him for I love Him GoV
-
So with the wan waste grasses on my spearB
I ride for ever seeking after GodG
My hair grows whiter than my thistle plumeW
And all my limbs are loose but in my eyesX
The star of an unconquerable praiseT
For in my soul one hope for ever singsY
That at the next white corner of a roadZ
My eyes may look on HimA2
Hush I shall knowV
The place when it is found a twisted pathB2
Under a twisted pear tree this I sawC2
In the first dream I had ere I was bornD2
Wherein He spokeE2
But the grey clouds come downF2
In hail upon the icy plains I rideG2
Burning for ever in consuming fireH2
