III For the CrecheA

-
I remember my mother the day that we metC
A thing I shall never entirely forgetC
And I toy with the fancy that young as I amD
I should know her again if we met in a tramD
But mother is happy in turning a crankE
That increases the balance in somebody's bankE
And I feel satisfaction that mother is freeF
From the sinister task of attending to meF
-
They have brightened our room that is spacious and coolG
With diagrams used in the Idiot SchoolG
And Books for the Blind that will teach us to seeF
But mother is happy for mother is freeF
For mother is dancing up forty eight floorsH
For love of the Leeds International StoresH
And the flame of that faith might perhaps have grown coldI
With the care of a baby of seven weeks oldI
-
For mother is happy in greasing a wheelJ
For somebody else who is cornering SteelJ
And though our one meeting was not very longK
She took the occasion to sing me this songK
O hush thee my baby the time will soon comeL
When thy sleep will be broken with hooting and humL
There are handles want turning and turning all dayB
And knobs to be pressed in the usual wayB
-
O hush thee my baby take rest while I croonM
For Progress comes early and Freedom too soonM
