When we went hunting the DragonA
In the days when we were youngB
We tossed the bright world over our shoulderC
As bugle and baldrick slungB
Never was world so wild and fairD
As what went by on the windE
Never such fields of paradiseF
As the fields we left behindE
For this is the best of a rest for menG
That men should rise and rideH
Making a flying fairylandI
Of market and country sideH
Wings on the cottage wings on the woodJ
Wings upon pot and panK
For the hunting of the DragonA
That is the life of a manK
-
For men grow weary of fairylandI
When the Dragon is a dreamL
And tire of the talking bird in the treeM
The singing fish in the streamL
And the wandering stars grow stale grow staleN
And the wonder is stiff with scornO
For this is the honour of fairylandI
And the following of the hornO
-
Beauty on beauty called us backP
When we could rise and rideH
And a woman looked out of every windowQ
As wonderful as a brideH
And the tavern sign as a tabard blazedR
And the children cheered and ranK
For the love of the hate of the DragonA
That is the pride of a manK
-
The sages called him a shadowQ
And the light went out of the sunA
And the wise men told us that all was wellS
And all was weary and oneA
And then and then in the quiet gardenA
With never a weed to killT
We knew that his shining tail had shoneU
In the white road over the hillT
We knew that the clouds were flakes of flameV
We knew that the sunset fireC
Was red with the blood of the DragonA
Whose death is the world's desireC
-
For the horn was blown in the heart of the nightW
That men should rise and rideH
Keeping the tryst of a terrible jestX
Never for long untriedH
Drinking a dreadful blood for wineY
Never in cup or canK
The death of a deathless DragonA
That is the life of a manK
