Gloria In Profundis Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABACDEED FGFGHIIH JKJKLMML NONOPQQP

There has fallen on earth for a tokenA
A god too great for the skyB
He has burst out of all things and brokenA
The bounds of eternityC
Into time and the terminal landD
He has strayed like a thief or a loverE
For the wine of the world brims overE
Its splendour is spilt on the sandD
-
Who is proud when the heavens are humbleF
Who mounts if the mountains fallG
If the fixed stars topple and tumbleF
And a deluge of love drowns allG
Who rears up his head for a crownH
Who holds up his will for a warrantI
Who strives with the starry torrentI
When all that is good goes downH
-
For in dread of such falling and failingJ
The fallen angels fellK
Inverted in insolence scalingJ
The hanging mountain of hellK
But unmeasured of plummet and rodL
Too deep for their sight to scanM
Outrushing the fall of manM
Is the height of the fall of GodL
-
Glory to God in the LowestN
The spout of the stars in spateO
Where thunderbolt thinks to be slowestN
And the lightning fears to be lateO
As men dive for sunken gemP
Pursuing we hunt and hound itQ
The fallen star has found itQ
In the cavern of BethlehemP
