His hair was like a lightB
O weary weary were the worldC
But here is all arightC

The Christ child lay on Mary's breastC
His hair was like a starD
O stern and cunning are the kingsE
But here the true hearts areD
-

'A Christmas Carol' poemJ
-
I-
-
The shepherds went their hasty wayK
And found the lowly stable shedC
Where the Virgin Mother layK
And now they checked their eager treadC
For to the Babe that at her bosom clungL
A Mother's song the Virgin Mother sungL
-
II-
-
They told her how a glorious lightC
Streaming from a heavenly throngM
Around them shone suspending nightC
While sweeter than a mother's songM
Blest Angels heralded the Savior's birthN
Glory to God on high and Peace on EarthN
-
III-
-
She listened to the tale divineO
And closer still the Babe she pressedC
And while she cried the Babe is mineO
The milk rushed faster to her breastC
Joy rose within her like a summer's mornP
Peace Peace on Earth the Prince of Peace is bornP
-
IV-
-
Thou Mother of the Prince of PeaceQ
Poor simple and of low estateC
That strife should vanish battle ceaseQ
O why should this thy soul elateC
Sweet Music's loudest note the Poet's storyG
Didst thou ne'er love to hear of fame and gloryG
-
VG
-
And is not War a youthful kingR
A stately Hero clad in mailS
Beneath his footsteps laurels springR
Him Earth's majestic monarchs hailS
Their friends their playmate and his bold bright eye-
Compels the maiden's love confessing sigh-
-
VI-
-
Tell this in some more courtly sceneT
To maids and youths in robes of stateC
I am a woman poor and meanT
And wherefore is my soul elateC
War is a ruffian all with guilt defiledC
That from the aged father's tears his childC
-
VII-
-
A murderous fiend by fiends adoredC
He kills the sire and starves the sonU
The husband kills and from her boardC
Steals all his widow's toil had wonU
Plunders God's world of beauty rends awayK
All safety from the night all comfort from the dayK
-
VIII-
-
Then wisely is my soul elateC
That strife should vanish battle ceaseQ
I'm poor and of low estateC
The Mother of the Prince of PeaceQ
Joy rises in me like a summer's mornP
Peace Peace on Earth The Prince of Peace is bornP
