Such wast thou now in earth belowA
Dust and a skeleton thou artB
Above thy bones and clayC
Here vainly placed by loving handsD
Sole guardian of memory and woeA
The image of departed beauty standsD
Mute motionless it seems with pensive gazeE
To watch the flight of the departing daysE
That gentle look that wheresoe'er it fellF
As now it seems to fallG
Held fast the gazer with its magic spellF
That lip from which as from some copious urnH
Redundant pleasure seems to overflowA
That neck on which love once so fondly hungI
That loving hand whose tender pressure stillJ
The hand it clasped with trembling joy would thrillJ
That bosom whose transparent lovelinessE
The color from the gazer's cheek would stealK
All these have been and now remains aloneL
A wretched heap of bones and clayC
Concealed from sight by this benignant stoneL
-
To this hath Fate reducedM
The form that when with life it beamedN
To us heaven's liveliest image seemedN
O Nature's endless mysteryO
To day of grand and lofty thoughts the sourceE
And feelings not to be describedP
Beauty rules all and seemsE
Like some mysterious splendor from on highQ
Forth darted to illuminateR
This dreary wildernessE
Of superhuman fateS
Of fortunate realms and golden worldsE
A token and a hope secureT
To give our mortal stateS
To morrow for some trivial causeE
Loathsome to sight abominable baseE
Becomes what but a little time beforeU
Wore such an angel faceE
And from our minds in the same breathV
The grand conception it inspiredW
Swift vanishes and leaves no traceE
What infinite desiresE
What visions grand and highQ
In our exalted thoughtX
With magic power creates true harmonyO
O'er a delicious and mysterious seaO
The exulting spirit glidesE
As some bold swimmer sports in Ocean's tidesE
But oh the mischief that is wroughtX
If but one accent out of tuneY
Assaults the ear Alas how soonY
Our paradise is turned to naughtX
-
O human nature why is thisE
If frail and vile throughoutZ
If shadow dust thou art say whyQ
Hast thou such fancies aspirations highQ
And yet if framed for nobler endsE
Alas why are we doomedA2
To see our highest motives truest thoughtsE
By such base causes kindled and consumedA2
