IA
-
I round the threshold wandering hereB
Vainly the tempest and the rain invokeC
That they may keep my lady prisonerD
-
And yet the wind was howling in the woodsE
The roving thunder bellowing in the cloudsF
Before the dawn had risen in the skyA
-
O ye dear clouds O heaven O earth O treesG
My lady goes Have mercy if on earthH
Unhappy lovers ever mercy findI
-
Awake ye whirlwinds storm charged clouds awakeJ
O'erwhelm me with your floods until the sunK
To other lands brings back the light of dayL
-
Heaven opens the wind falls the grass the leavesM
Are motionless around the dazzling sunK
In my tear laden eyes remorseless shinesN
-
-
IIA
-
The light of day was fading in the westO
The smoke no more from village chimneys curledP
Nor voice of man nor bark of dog was heardQ
-
When she obedient to Love's rendezvousR
Had reached the middle of a plain than whichS
No other more bewitching could be foundT
-
The moon on every side her lustre shedU
And all in robes of silver light arrayedV
The trees with which the place was garlandedV
-
The rustling boughs were murmuring to the windV
And blending with the plaintive nightingaleW
A rivulet poured forth its sweet lamentV
-
The sea shone in the distance and the fieldsX
And groves and slowly rising one by oneK
The summits of the mountains were revealedV
-
In quiet shade the sombre valley layL
While all the little hills around were clothedV
With the soft lustre of the dewy moonY
-
The maiden kept the silent lonely pathZ
And gently passing o'er her face she feltV
The motion of the perfume laden breezeG
-
If she were happy it were vain to askA2
The scene delighted her and the delightV
Her heart was promising was greater stillB2
-
How swift your flight O lovely hours sereneC2
No other pleasure here below enduresD2
Or lingers with us long save hope aloneE2
-
The night began to change and dark becameF2
The face of heaven that was so beautifulG2
And all her pleasure now was turned to fearH2
-
An angry cloud precursor of the stormI2
Behind the mountains rose and still increasedV
Till moon or star no longer could be seenC2
-
She saw it spreading upon every sideV
And by degrees ascending through the airJ2
And now with its black mantle covering allK2
-
The scanty light more faint and faint becameF2
The wind meanwhile was rising in the groveL2
That on the farther side the spot enclosedV
-
And every moment was more boisterousM2
Till every bird awaking in its frightV
Amidst the trembling leaves was flutteringN2
-
The cloud increasing still unto the coastV
Descended so that one extremityV
The mountains touched the other touched the seaV
-
And now from out its black and hollow wombO2
The pattering rain drops falling fast were heardV
The sound increasing as the cloud drew nearH2
-
And round her now the glancing lightning flashedV
In fearful mood and made her shut her eyesP2
The ground was black the air a mass of flameF2
-
Her trembling knees could scarce her weight sustainQ2
The thunder roared with a continuous soundV
Like torrent plunging headlong from the cliffR2
-
At times she paused the dismal scene to viewR
In blank dismay then on she ran againS2
Her hair and clothes all streaming in the windV
-
The cruel wind beat hard against her breastV
And rushing fiercely with its angry breathT2
The cold drops dashed remorseless in her faceU2
-
The thunder like a beast assaulted herD
With terrible unintermitting roarV2
And more and more the rain and tempest ragedV
-
And from all sides in wild confusion flewR
The dust and leaves the branches and the stonesW2
With hideous tumult inconceivableG2
-
Her weary blinded eyes now coveringN2
And folding close her clothes against her breastV
She through the storm her fearful path pursuedV
-
But now the lightning glared so in her faceU2
That overcome by fright at last she wentV
No farther and her heart within her sankX2
-
And back she turned And even as she turnedV
The lightning ceased to flash the air was darkY2
The thunder's voice was hushed the wind stood stillB2
And all was silent round and she at restV
